HIGHLIGHT on Architecture: The Indonesian Heritage Society presents Tariq Khalil. Who would expect that an IHS evening lecture on the city of Bandung would inspire a six-year quest? This is what happened to Tariq Khalil and culminated in his book in progress, *Retronesia’s High Style Rediscovered.
Tariq’s eye and imagination were caught by the so-called Jenki architecture, cleverly blended Indische styles with the new geometry of post-war Southern California’s drive-in culture.
He began a series of journeys from Sumatra to Papua taking photographs, collecting oral histories and archival images.
*Retronesia* uncovers a lost era of the good times that inspired risk taking in architecture and showcases the heyday of Indonesian mid-century modern architecture and how it shaped the look of the new Republic. Lecture in English, organized by Indonesian Heritage Society.
Open to public. Entrance donation Rp.30k (Students); Rp.50k (Public)
The Indonesian Heritage Society is a non-profit organization offering participants the opportunity to learn more about the rich cultural heritage of Indonesia and dedicated to supporting Indonesia’s cultural institutions.
